Hey guys this is Alex, I’m an insurance broker and today I’ll be telling you about the difference between dental insurance and a dental savings plan.
So dental insurance is an insurance that helps you pay for the cost of different dental work like cleaning your teeth, pulling out teeth, root canals, that kind of stuff. So, what I normally see with a dental insurance plan is that your regular routine care like a tooth cleaning is going to be covered 100% by your dental insurance. And then if you need intermediate type work like fillings or simple extractions some companies will cover that right of way and some will make you wait six months, and they’ll typically split that with you 50-50. And then for more complicated work like root canals, crowns or oral surgery and more complex work like that you typically got a one year waiting period.
“Wait,” you might ask yourself, “what is a waiting period?”
So, a waiting period is where if you need the dental work done before you have passed this point in your waiting period your dental insurance won’t pay for it.
“Well that’s not fair,” you may say.
Well if you think about it that’s the only way the dental insurance company is going to make any money. These types of dental work like root canals, extractions, oral surgery; those typically cost in the thousands of dollars and if every dental insurance were to cover that from day one, they’d go broke really quick.
“So, is there a workaround, is there a way around that?”, you might ask.
There actually is, and it’s in the form of a plan called a dental savings plan. Now a dental savings plan is not insurance. Essentially what it is, is a pre-negotiated rate for different types of dental work between your dental savings plan and then dentist that you go see. So with that, you are able to go from day one for any type of dental work including the cleanings, root canals, crowns, sometimes they’ll even cover things such as cosmetic dentistry which most dental insurance doesn’t cover. And you typically see a savings there between 15%-50% right off the bat.
